Note: Some Pets no longer recommends pet food and no longer covers kibble or any treats or food that contain high levels of filler grains, necessary ingredients, or sugar. This post was written previous to that change.
Merrick Dog Food is a premium natural dog food (and cat food) made with human-grade ingredients. Merrick Pet Care is a Texas family-owned company that uses locally-sourced ingredients. Ingredients are also human grade.
Although Merrick gets high marks for locally sourcing their ingredients and using human grade items, Merrick has previously been recalled. Merrick recalls include two 2010 filet beef squares recalls, and a 2011 Merrick recall of their Doggie Wishbone pet treats due to possible Salmonella contamination. Also in 2011, Merrick recalled their Junior Texas Taffy dog for the same reason. In 2012 Merrick recalled their All-Natural Beef Chew dog treats. The number of recalls of this brand are aa bit troubling.
However, on the plus side, Merrick uses no overseas ingredients and they follow strict FDA food standards. Merrick dog food has no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. It is also free of by-products or fillers. The focus of the food is on meat and they use a limited number of ingredients. Merrick makes a grain free formula that uses sweet potato for the carbohydrate source, which is one of our favorites. Salmon meal adds omega 3s.
Consumers tend to love this brand, with it generally getting high customer ratings on sites such as Amazon.com. Overall, I like the look of this food, given the sourcing and human grade ingredients, but I hate the recall history. I give it a B. Absent all those recalls, it would have gotten an A.
