We adopted Tyson, a staffordshire terrier, when he was only 5 weeks old… Here in Nicaragua, people sell puppies to feed their family so as soon as the dog is old enough to eat on his own, that’s it! Unfortunately, it makes for pretty weak and sick puppies since they don’t get all the vitamins, nutrients and antibodies they need before being taken away from their mother… Tyson was no different; he was small, weak, and diseased, but when I saw him I though “If I don’t adopt him, he is not going to make it!”
The first thing I did was to take him to the “Vet”. Again, being in a 3rd world country, going to the vet is not what you are used to coming from a rich country: vets here work more with farm animals then “family pets” so their bedside manners often leaves to be desired, and their knowledge as well. So I got what I could in terms of info, gave him some shots, bought some anti-parasite meds and went back home.
For the first 3 month of his life, we didn’t know if he was going to make it, he was always sick, sleeping all the time and even developed some sort of seizures… But we took him to the vet every time there was something wrong with him and he hung in there…
Tyson is now 14 months old and he still has some health issues but the seizures have stopped and he is getting stronger. We are very hopeful that in time he will overcome all those health problems and will have a great life with us! Would you like us to publish YOUR PET STORY? Click Here!
UPDATE: Unfortunately, only 4 months after writing this post, Tyson passed away (January 26, 2014) of multiple organ failure… He had been fighting all of his very young life just to survive and his body was tired… He wanted to rest… He was only with us for 18 months but we loved him for 100 lifetime! We love you Tyson and you will be with us for ever. R.I.P <3
