A Baby Baboon’s Frightening Encounter With Lions

This story might begin on a sad note but it ends on a positive one with a remarkable heroic twist! Nature is amazing and sometimes if you look closely you will see something extraordinary… This is the extraordinary story of a little baboon’s frightening encounter with lions!

After a lioness unfortunately killed a female baboon in front of photographer Evan Schiller and Lisa Holzwarth something totally unexpected happened… A little baby baboon that had been attached to the female jumped off her and tried to climb a tree nearby to escape the dangerous predator. Unfortunately, the little baboon was hurt and too weak to climb. The movement attracted the attention of the lioness that moved closer to investigate. Thinking that the lion was going to make only one bite of the little guy, the photographers kept on documenting the drama unfolding.

But instead of eating the baby, something completely unexpected happened: the lioness started playing with it and after a few moments, tenderly picked him up in her mouth and settled down in the grass with him. She almost seemed to want to protect him by cradling him between her front paws. Suddenly, a male lion approach and the female reacted aggressively to try and push him away. In this fraction of a second, a brave male baboon descended from a nearby tree, snatched the little baby baboon from the ground and took him back to safety up a tree!

I don’t know which is more touching, the compassion that lioness showed the baby of the mother she had just killed, or the father risking his own life to save his son? Watch in the last photograph how the gentle the father is with his son after saving him from certain death. Is it love? I say yes!
