Giant pandas consume up to 30 lbs (14kg) of bamboo everyday, so the loss of bamboo species to habitat destruction is devastating for this gentle animal.

Since the Act was enacted in 1973, 9 species have gone extinct and 14 have recovered enough to be taken off the list.

There is only about 1000 Kemps ridley nesting female left in the world. Their endangered situation is due to over harvesting of the eggs over the last hundred years.

In Florida, the green sea turtle is listed as endangered, in other areas it is considered threatened.

The polar bear was added to the endangered animal list in 2008. The constantly receding ice in the arctic due to climate change is jeopardizing the future of the specie.

In 2010, 1657 animal species were listed as “critically endangered”. Unfortunately, that is 14 more than the year before.

Great news! All of these plus 11 more have recovered enough to be taken off the list. For example, the bald eagle had fewer than 500 nesting pairs in 1963 and in 2007 counted as many as 10 000 pairs!
