New Gorilla Baby at The San Francisco Zoo

On July 17 2013 at 2pm, the San Francisco Zoo welcomed a new member to their big happy family but the Zoo waited until December 21 2013 to introduce the little trouble maker to the world.  She is as cute as it’s possible to be and her name is Kabibe  and it means “little lady” in Swahili. The other possible names were: Malaika (“heavenly messenger” in Swahili), and Kenura (“joy” in Kikuyu). This adorable new comer is a little baby female western lowland gorilla. Kabibe’s mother, Nneka, a 14 years old female born at the Zoo,  is doing fine but the adorable 5-month-old gorilla is being cared for by her gentle and loving grandmother named Bawang. The 33-year-old matriarch did the same thing for Kabibe’s big brother Hasani, who is now five-years-old. As the zoo representative states, “Once again, Bawang has taken on the huge responsibility of motherhood and has set a positive tone for the troop.”
