Did you know that over 50% of pets are overweight? Yes, 50%! That means that weight loss for pets is a serious concern for many of us. One of the most important factors in achieving your pet’s perfect weight is consistency. Here are some tips for consistent weight loss, plus information about Hill’s® Science Diet® Perfect Weight and a sweepstakes where you can enter to win 10 weeks of Perfect Weight. See how I bolded that? That is because that is a pretty darn cool deal! So, read on for more.
Tips for Consistency to Achieve Your Pet’s Perfect Weight
1) Measure Your Pet’s Food: Consistently measuring food is essential to pet weight loss. Find out how much your pet should take in per day and measure the food to meet that. A great place to start is with the information on the bag. I like to keep my measuring cups with the food so that I won’t forget just how important it is to measure. Don’t forget to factor in treats and exercise too! More active pets need more food. Also, if you use training treats, remember that those have calories. I like to use a portion of the dog’s food as training treats and then subtract that amount from the meal. Or, I use something low calorie like cut up green beans.
2) Keep to a Schedule: Feed your pets at the same time each day and plan treat times. Make sure the whole family is on board so that everyone knows exactly how much food and treats your pet is getting each day. A diet for your pet won’t work if everyone overloads your pet with treats thinking that no one else is giving those to them.
I find that using a planner or calendar is great for sticking to a schedule. You can use this great calendar (pictured below) for planning and tracking consistency. It is free and downloadable!
3) Provide Consistent Exercise: Part of knowing how much food your pet should take in is also knowing how much activity he or she gets in each day. By planning for consistent exercise and play time, you can consistently feed the correct amount and not overfeed. Consistent exercise and play also keeps your pet healthy and happy overall and can provide for some great bonding experiences between you and your pet. It can be good for you too! Take a walk with your pet and you both can get a bit healthier!
4) Keep Healthy Nutrition a Constant: Don’t fall into the trap of feeding healthy treats but not considering food, or the opposite of focusing on food and ignoring the nutritional value of treats. I like to consistently measure food and then feed my pets fresh veggies like carrots as treats to assure that they are not taking in too many extra calories.
