In the world of human food, clean eating is a current, and quite good for us, trend. Have you stopped to think about clean eating for your dog? Clean eating focuses on fresh, whole ingredients and avoids anything overly processed or refined. It stays away from sugar and refined grains, and instead looks to fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, and whole grains. In a nutshell, it is clean in terms of being free from all of the chemicals, preservatives, and fillers that so many packaged foods contain.
Pet food often is full of unnecessary ingredients as well, but it doesn’t have to be. To learn more about the best products to feed our dog, we recently took an online Pet Assessment from Side by Side, and had a lovely 30-minute phone consultation with pet nutritionist and Founder Marney Prince, who is one of the founders of the Company. The result is that Eve is trying a great new food from Side by Side that is the best in clean eating for pets. Plus we got some great 100% pure meat treats that are perfect for Ty, who eats only items free of starchy ingredients because of his lymphoma.
Do You Know What is in Your Pet Food?
Have you ever looked carefully at the label of your pet food? Take a look and see if you know what everything is in it. Unless you are already feeding a premium raw or dehydrated raw type of diet, odds are good that there will be all sorts of things in the list that do not sound like food. When I look at a food, I want to recognize the ingredients. I also don’t want to see something like simple carbs listed in there. Sadly, it can be a challenge to find treats that do not have simple carbs! But never fear, you can easily give your pet wholesome clean food and treats if you know where to look. Side By Side is a great example such an option that offers clean, wholesome food and it is based on a personalized nutrition plan to boot.
About Side By Side
Side By Side is a new brand that formulates premium whole food nutrition made in small batches. The company sources high quality ingredients and utilizes only natural sources of protein, vitamins, minerals, fiber and pure herbs, to provide a personalized nutrition plan for your pet, with minimal processing. With opening a new store in Chicago (our area!), Side by Side is launching a holistic new approach to pet nutrition by incorporating a proprietary Pet Assessment process through an online tool that allows the company to make nutrition recommendations curated specifically for your pets’ individual needs. I took the online assessment for Eve and also had a phone consultation.
Eve’s Consultation and New Clean Food
The online assessment inquires into your dog’s health, activity level, body composition, and other characteristics. We filled out the form and then spoke with Marney Prince on the phone for a consultation. We discussed Eve’s past issues with grains causing irritable bowel symptoms for her and Ty’s need for a very low carb diet because of his cancer. Marney was a joy to talk to, and she clearly was well versed in pet nutrition. She recommended that Eve try Side By Side Harmony, which is a freeze-dried raw recipe. Eve was already eating a dehydrated raw product, so the switch was quite easy for her. For Ty, who is on a nearly keto diet, she recommended some of the Side By Side treats that consist of nothing but organ meat.
Here are the ingredients of the Harmony food. They are all wholesome, healthy ingredients, without any weird unpronounceable preservatives or mystery ingredients among them: Beef Heart, Salmon, Duck Necks, Beef Liver, Carrots, Celery, Pumpkin, Kale, Green Beans, Beets, Parsley, Apple Cider Vinegar, Spinach, Coconut Oil, Dried Yeast, Salt, Sunflower Seed, Sesame Seed, Pumpkin Seed, Quinoa, Cassava Root, Dehydrated Alfalfa, Dried Kelp, Turmeric, Chia Seed.
Each ingredient in the Side By Side recipes also serves a specific purpose. For protein, the recipes include fresh, all-natural proteins including chicken, duck, beef, rabbit and fish. Finely ground bones and organ meats such as hearts and liver are also included. Then there are vegetables, including greens, carrots, and sweet potato, plus fruits such as apples. The recipes also include healthy fats, herbs, and supplements. I love the addition of turmeric to the food, which is great as an anti-inflammatory for Eve who has a chronic hip flexor issue. The recipes are developed in collaboration with a holistic veterinarian, credentialed in Eastern and Western medicine, and they have no additives, toxins, or carcinogens. While we are using a dehydrated raw product, Side By Side also offers frozen raw recipes, food toppers, treats, and supplements. The freeze-dried version comes in patties that you simply break up and reconstitute with water.
Side By Side has 12 different treat offerings, some of which are single ingredient organ meats. We got packages of the beef lungs and chicken hearts
