Eve recently spent some time testing Side by Side pet food, and Ty sampled some Side by Side treats. Both items were a hit with both the dogs and myself. As I wrote previously in covering the brand, I want my dogs to eat clean food that is free of anything overly processed or refined. Neither dog gets sugar or refined grains, and I seek out food and treats that use fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, and only whole grains, if there are any grains at all. Side by Side pet food and treats are just that. They are clean in terms of being free from all the chemicals, preservatives, and fillers that so many packaged foods contain. Side by Side’s whole food nutrition includes integrated product offerings such as food diets, treats, supplements, toppers, and soon to be released broths. Each product is thoughtfully formulated to provide a complete and balanced nutrition plan for your pet.
The Side By Side Experience
Switching to Side by Side was a unique and very pleasant experience. The process begins with an online Pet Assessment from Side by Side. We then also had a lovely 30-minute phone consultation with pet nutritionist and Founder Marney Prince. Marney and I discussed Eve’s past issues with grains causing irritable bowel symptoms for her and Ty’s need for a very low carb diet because of his cancer. She was very knowledgeable and made recommendations specific to Ty and Eve’s needs. She ultimately recommended that Eve try Side by Side Harmony, which is a freeze-dried raw recipe. For Ty, who is on a nearly keto diet, she recommended some of the Side by Side treats that consist of nothing but organ meat. I am a big fan of organ meat as treats, especially for dogs with cancer, but also for all pets.

Eve’s Side by Side Harmony Dog Food
Eve loved her Harmony food! She was already eating a dehydrated raw product, so the switch was quite easy for her. We did a relatively fast transition over a couple of days and had no problems. If Eve had not already been eating a dehydrated raw diet, I probably would have lengthened the transition more. Harmony is freeze dried to lock in nutrition. It comes in individually wrapped cakes that you simply break up and moisten with warm water to reconstitute them. It is super convenient both for at home and for when we take the dogs camping. We recently got a popup camper, so camping is a new activity for us. Having easy to prepare dog food with us in the trailer is appreciated! Side by Side also offers a frozen version for those that prefer frozen raw diets.

Harmony is a combination of beef heart, whole wild Alaskan salmon, and duck necks for protein, which in wet weight accounts for 68% of the recipe. It is balanced with a combination of healthy fruits, vegetables, roots and herbs to make it complete, balanced and amazing at providing healing nutrition. The recipe also provides Omega 3 fatty acids in an unadulterated, natural format.
Something I really like about the Harmony food is that it looks like food. You can see the chunks of meat and vegetables in it. Here are the ingredients of the food which are all wholesome, healthy ingredients: Beef Heart, Salmon, Duck Necks, Beef Liver, Carrots, Celery, Pumpkin, Kale, Green Beans, Beets, Parsley, Apple Cider Vinegar, Spinach, Coconut Oil, Dried Yeast, Salt, Sunflower Seed, Sesame Seed, Pumpkin Seed, Quinoa, Cassava Root, Dehydrated Alfalfa, Dried Kelp, Turmeric, Chia Seed.
.

The ingredients in the food are well thought out. The Side by Side recipes include fresh, all-natural proteins including chicken, duck, beef, rabbit and fish. Finely ground bones and organ meats such as hearts and liver are also included. Then there are vegetables, including greens, carrots, and sweet potato, plus fruits such as apples. The recipes also include healthy fats, herbs, and supplements. I love the addition of turmeric to the food, which is great as an anti-inflammatory for Eve who has a chronic hip flexor issue. The recipes are developed in collaboration with a holistic veterinarian, credentialed in Eastern and Western medicine, and they have no additives, toxins, or carcinogens. While we are using a dehydrated freeze-dried raw product, Side by Side also offers frozen raw & cooked recipes, food toppers, treats, and supplements.

Eve loved the food. She gobbled it down excitedly, and she did very well on it. Her activity level was great and she was not exhibiting any GI issues or issue with her hip. This is a quality food that Eve and I definitely can stand behind. Eve always starts telling me that it is time for dinner about an hour early and she was no different with her Side by Side diet. She does love to eat! She gave me this great stink-eye, disapproving-corgi pose during our photo shoot. I loved it so much that I just had to use it!

Ty’s Side By Side Treats
Side By Side has 12 different treat offerings, some of which are single ingredient organ meats. We got packages of the Side by Side beef lungs and chicken heart treats. Both dogs went nuts for these. When I get treats that they particularity like, they will come tearing for the door upon recall. They did just that for the Side by Side treats. That made me extra happy since I am particularly a fan of organ meats for Ty, who does not eat grains or even starchy vegetables because of his lymphoma.

The treats are 100% natural single protein treats, made with whole food ingredients, and have no additives, artificial flavors, colors, or extracts. The beef and chicken are raised without antibiotics or hormones (federal regulations also prohibit the use of hormones in poultry).
It can be difficult for me to find appropriate treats for Ty, so I am very happy to add the Side by Side treats to the lineup of items that Ty loves and that I can feel comfortable giving to him. I am also excited that Side by Side is in my area (Chicago), so I might soon be picking up their products at my local pet store! By the way, the chicken hearts are great for cats too!
