Acana is a top rated dog food that gets excellent consumer reviews. Acana is often thought of as a top premium dog food. It is manufactured by Champion Pet Foods Alberta, Canada. The company sources its ingredients locally and produces the food in its own facilities. In an age where pet food recalls are unfortunately becoming standard, there have been no Acana recalls. We give it a B+ to A-.

Acana takes the step of developing what they term to be biologically appropriate dog food. The basis behind it is the view that many holistic or natural dog foods lack bioloigcally appropriate nutrients by being deficient in meat protein or high in carbohydrates from grains, with few fresh ingredients. To remedy this, Acana focuses on a high level of meat in the recipes with Acana dog food formulas containing between 45% and 65% meat content. The company also focuses on diverse meat ingredients, which can be great if you ahve a dog that has irritable bowl or inflamatory bowl and needs a novel protein. Protien sources available include: Egg, Lamb, Rabbit, Geese, Ducks, Chicken, and Fish.
Champion Pet Foods cut carbohydrates in Acana food. For carbs they use steel-cut oats as the only grain source-a d I wish they would cut that as well. the rest come from whole fruits and vegetables that are locally sourced, making the ingredients much more trustowrthy. All ingredients are fresh, never frozen and are preservative free.
Especially interesting is that Acana offers a sport and agility formula aimed at high energy and especially active dogs. Crude protein level in it is 33%, with fat at 24%. The formula includes various supplments to support active dogs. It is an interesting formula and I’m curious to hear from anyone who has triend it.
We give it a B+ or perhaps A-. It misses the highest possible mark because of the inclusion of some grain and because any dry food is hard to push into the full A or A+ rating given the importance of moisture in a dog’s food. But for a dry kibble, this is one of the best.
Acana is availaable at:
Amazon.com, where you can get free shipping with Amazon Prime and subscription options (that is how I get my dog food)
It is also at Entirely Pets, with some subscrition options.
Look for it also in speciality pet stores.
Very impressive to find a dog food that hasn’t had any recalls. Having had a number of friends with dogs who have had severe allergies I keep my eyes open for dog foods that will keep my 13-year-old terrier mix healthy and safe. Great post! Happy A-to-Z blogging!
Yes, no recalls these day is quite impressive. Looking forward to A-Z!
Hi there – my blog is about animals, too! I feed my dog Orijen, which is the next food up made by the same people. Quite pricey here in the UK, but I trust it, and it is made by drying it slowly instead of nuking it with heat, which is what destroys all the taste in dried dog food, so they have to add nasty stuff to it to get the taste back in. My dog is my assistance dog, so she is worth it! You can see her on my blog, she has her own section. Good luck in the A-z. Liz http://www.lizbrownleepoet.com
I’m planning on covering Orijen for the letter O this month! 😀
Lovely blog you have there! Interesting post about dog food. Nice to know it is free of recalls and that it is Canadian, like me! 🙂
Interesting article. It’s hard to find a good fit isn’t it? I think I finally found what works for my two dogs but naturally they are on two different brands!
This looks like great dog food! I love that it has so much protein content. It really is difficult to find pet foods (especially dry ones) that offer more than carbs and rendered content.
This is one I haven’t heard of. Always like hearing about new foods. The one we use frequently is also from Canada. Thanks for the info!
I always like learning about new pet food. Thanks for the info! I’ve never heard of this brand before.
I’ve not tried this one, but that’s a great review. Pretty much everything these days has had a recall, it seems.
Nice review. No recalls is hard to find these days.
I had never looked much into this food, but glad to hear some positive thoughts on it. I’m still trying to figure out what is going to be best for Atka’s allergies.
I have recently been seeing this food – looks like a really good food for dogs. TY for the info!
I’ve never heard of this dog food. It seems like a pretty awesome dog food. Thanks for the review!
We’ve heard of this before, and actually love the high protein content for the sport and agility kibble. It’s really nice to see a protein # this high 🙂
Really like all the different proteins they offer!
